OVERVIEW OF TRA VINH PROVINCE

Natural area, geographical border an Administration:

Tra Vinh is a province in the Mekong Delta, situated at the geographical coordinate of 9031’ to 10004’ Northern latitudes and 105057’ to 106
036’ Eastern meridians. Its East and South-East are bounded by East Sea, with a coast of 65km long; it is bounded by Soc Trang province in the South and South West, with the border of over 60km long and which is Hau River; it is bounded by Vinh Long province in the West and North-West, with the bound which is arroyos and land of near 60km long; and it is bounded by Ben Tre province in the North and North East, with the bound which is Co Chien River (a ramification of Tien River), and of 60km long.

Tra Vinh is a coastal province in Mekong Delta. Tra Vinh is located two ramifications of Tien River and Hau River, with the natural area of about 2,369km2. in which, the area of the agricultural land occupies over 62%. Its population is about 1,000,000 habitants, and Khmer ethnic group occupies 30% of this population. The average of income (domestic) in 2002 is 350USD/ per capita (increase of 74% in comparison to the time of separation from Cuu Long province in 1992).

The territory of Tra Vinh is located between two big rivers, takes a shape of a triangle, this delta has been formed for long time ago, but also comprising of new extended lands. Through the rise and fall of the history and time, the land of Tra Vinh is affected by the rules of strata construction with the times of “marine transgression” and “marine concession”,etc… They can consider this land as a child of Mekong River and East Sea. Two estuaries of the Mekong River (Mother River) are Hau River and Co Chien River which have transported the alluvium to raise the level of this land and to make it spread to the sea.

Land of Tra Vinh is a coastal delta, without mountain and hill, and its average height is about 2m to 3m in comparison to the sea level. In looking in details, the land of Tra Vinh has many ripple places as sea waves, affected by the tide of the East Sea on the alluvium. They call these ripple places as “mounds”, or “hillocks” and they name each of them. The land mix of these mounds and hillocks is clay sand, and at some places there is humus alluvium. The mounds and hillocks usually spread to the direction of North East - South West, with the different dimensions; the with is usually from 100m to 200m, the length is often from 400m to 2,000m; and the height is about 2m to 5m in comparison to the sea level. Presently, Tra Vinh has hundreds of such mounds and hillocks, but their density of distribution and age is different, in general, nearer the sea the mounds and hillocks are thicker and younger.

As the other provinces in Mekong Delta, Tra Vinh has also a system of rivers, canals and arroyos which are entangle and disposed regularly as a system of blood vessels on a natural body of the province, average of 100m2 of the nature there are 10m2 of water surface. They can divide the network of rivers and canals of Tra Vinh into three systems: the system flows to the sea lying on the area of Duyen Hai District; the system flows to Co Chien river lying on the area of Tra Vinh township, Cang Long , Chau Thanh and Cau Ngang District; the system flows to Hau River lying on the area of Cau Ke, Tieu Can and Tra Cu District. The foresaid systems of rivers, canals and arroyos intersecting themselves create a network of communication and regulate the water level of the water sources supplying to the area of Tra Vinh: water of Hau River, Co Chien River, sea water, rain water, etc…this network of rivers and canals is not only extremely important for the irrigation, but also it brings the alluvium source of Mekong River to raise the level of land of Tra Vinh.

Tra Vinh has an original territorial waters with 65km long, limited by two rivers: Cung Hau estuary (Co Chien river estuary) and Dinh An estuary (Hau river estuary). These are two wide estuaries, and the suitable breeding grounds for many species of aquatic animals. The territorial waters of Tra Vinh has a moderate depth (from 5.5m to 24m). Its beach has little sand, much alluvium, therefore the most of coast is muddy.

The system of rivers, canals, arroyos and sea of Tra Vinh has an important sense for fields of economical, cultural and social life…Besides the irrigation and alluvium raising for crop plants, this system is also an ideal environment for catching and cultivating the aquatic products, it creates a favorable waterway network which contributes to the contact and cultural exchange among Tra Vinh and other country-sides and it is also a factor to regulate the climate and to balance the ecology.

Hydrography - Climate

Tra Vinh is in the tropical climate region with monsoon near equator, it is hot and humid round the year and there are two districts seasons: rainy season from May to November; and dry season from December to April of the next year; the average of rainfall is from 1,400mm to 1,600mm. being located in the region of lower latitudes, so Tra Vinh receives much sunshine, there are yearly over 2,500 hours of sunshine, the annual average temperature is from 250C to 270C, and the annual humidity is 80% to 85%... The annual wind policy is distributed as follows: from January to February: the wind is of the direction South-East with the wind force of 3 - 4 and they usually call as “temperamental wind”, from March to April the wind changes direction of South East, From May to June the monsoon of South West is mainly, that is the time of monsoon, and there is rain-storm; From July to December the monsoon changes gradually to the direction of South East, it is rainy, and to the direction of North East. Tra Vinh is located on the coast of the East Sea but there is rarely storm.

Tra Vinh is a coastal province, with many rivers, canals and arroyos, it receives directly the water sources from Mekong River, rain water and East Sea. The flow of Hau river and Co Chien river is very high in the region of Tra Vinh territory: about 1,500m3/second in the dry season and 6,000m3 in the rainy and flood season. The sea of Tra Vinh is in the marine region of semi-daily tide, everyday there are two times of rising and ebbing, the difference between the top of tide and the food of tide is 1 - 2.5m on the low tide days and 2.5 - 3.5m on the high tide days. The special character of the hydrography in Tra Vinh: the flows are complex and influenced by the tide of the East Sea.

The tide cycle of rising and ebbing is 15 days, the top of flood-tide appears on the first and the fifteenth days of the lunar year, and the top of the ebb-tide appears on the seventh and the twenty third days of the lunar year. Sea and the network dense of rivers and canals influence on the flood-tide and the ebb-tide going deep into the land and creating the salty water penetration to the inland. The hydrographical conditions of Tra Vinh affect on many fields of human activities. It has an active sense for the activities of cultivation, raising, catching of marine products and waterway traffic, and at the same time it causes also the fixed limits which influence on the supplying the fresh-water for the activities and the road traffic.
